
THE FIFTH EDITION OF CHORAL COMPOSITION AND EXPRESSION PRIZES AWARDED
BY THE VICE-COUNCIL OF CULTURE OF THE CANARY ISLANDS' AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY
AIMS TO ENCOURAGE CHORAL MUSICAL CREATIONS.
REGULATIONS
FIRST:
Any choral composition which fulfils the characteristics and
requirements pointed up in the second point of these regulations may be
entered for these prizes.
Prizewinners in previous editions of these prizes will only be
allowed to enter for this edition if they do so for a different category
from the one they were awarded the prize or if they are entering for these
prizes at least three years after having been awarded the prize.
Compositions written jointly by several authors will have to
be submitted together by all of them.
SECOND
Participation categories:
Category A: Children's choirs with instrumental accompaniment.
Characteristics and requirements:
1.- The text should be written in Spanish and there
will be no limitations as far as its theme is concerned.
2.- The composition should be a musical story or
tale written for two or three children voices and a small instrumental
group consisting of no more than twelve instrumentalists.
3.- The choral part should have a tessitura and
difficulty suitable for amateur children's choirs.
4.- The pieces should have the possibility to be
staged.
5.- They may have parts specially written for the
audience to participate (rhythms, ostinatos, special sounds...).
6.- The instrumental parts should not be far too
difficult.
7.- The length of the compositions may range from
10 to 20 minutes.
Category B: Adult choirs with instrumental accompaniment.
Characteristics and requirements:
1.- The text, which will be chosen freely by the author of the
composition, should preferably be by a poet from the Canary Islands. In
any case, it should be based on a Spanish literary text.
The compositions should be written for four mixed voices and
a small instrumental group consisting of no more than twelve instrumentalists.
They may have parts specially written for the audience to participate
(rhythms, ostinatos, improvisations, special sounds...).
Both the choral and the instrumental parts should not be far
too difficult so that amateur groups can perform them.
The length of the compositions may range from 10 to 20 minutes.
Category C: A cappella choirs.
Characteristics and requirements:
1.- The text, which will be chosen freely by the author of the
composition, should preferably be by a poet from the Canary Islands. In
any case, it should be based on a Spanish literary text.
In this category, authors are free to write either for an a cappella
mixed choir (SATB) or for an a cappella women's choir (SSA).
The difficulties of the compositions should be suitable for amateur
choirs.
The length of the compositions may range from 3 to 6 minutes.
Category D: Choirs performing traditional folk music from the
Canary Islands.
Characteristics and requirements:
1.- The pieces should be written for an a cappella mixed choir
and their composition should be inspired by folk tunes or motifs from the
Canary Islands.
The difficulties of the compositions should be suitable for amateur
choirs.
The length of the compositions may range from 3 to 6 minutes.
THIRD
Compositions with parts specially written for the audience to participate
in the categories A: Children's choirs with instrumental accompaniment
and B: Adult choirs with instrumental accompaniment will be specially valued.
Compositions inspired by texts by poets from the Canary Islands in the
categories B: Adult choirs with instrumental accompaniment and C: A cappella
choirs will also be
FOURTH
All submitted compositions should be original or unpublished.
FIFTH
Each author is responsible for the free use of the chosen texts and
should have all the necessary rights to use them.
SIXTH
Each composer can enter for as many compositions as he/she wishes.
The scores should be clear, legible, without ambiguities or crossings out
and should be written in black ink on numbered pages.
SEVENTH
1.- Compositions should be submitted in triplicate.
2.- Compositions should be submitted in a sealed envelope. A
pen name, a slogan or any other identification symbol should be written
on this envelope's outside as well as the category this composition in
entering for. The name of the author should never appear in this envelope.
3.- The name of the author, his/her address, telephone,
fax number or e-mail, a photocopy of his/her Identity Card, a brief Curriculum
Vitae and the title of the composition should be sent in another sealed
envelope with the same pen name, slogan or identification symbol as the
other one.
4.- Participants entering for several compositions should submit
them separately.
5.- The application form that appears in the appendix
of these regulations should be sent along with the first letter mentioned
above.
EIGHTH
Compositions should be submitted by 30 september 1999 to the Vice-Council
of Culture and Sport, whose address is Plaza de los Derechos Humanos, s/n,
Edificio de Servicios Múltiples, 5ª Planta, 35003, Las Palmas
de Gran Canaria.
NINTH
1.- For each category, prizes will be awarded as follows:
Category A: 500.000 pesetas. ** 3.005,061 Euros**
Category B: 500.000 pesetas. ** 3.005,061 Euros**
Category C: 200.000 pesetas ** 3.202,24 Euros**
Category D: 200.000 pesetas. ** 3.202,24 Euros**
2.- The jury may divide each prize among several prizes, or to
declare that a prize will not be awarded. The panel of judges may also
make honourable mentions, according to their point of view.
TENTH
The decision of the jury will be final; it will be taken by10th November
1999 and will be published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands.
ELEVENTH
All the rights related to the prizewinning compositions will
belong exclusively to the Vice-Council of Culture and Sport for three years
from the date of publication of the jury's decision on. Authors will not
be able to demand royalties from these compositions over this period of
time.
TWELFTH
1.- Once prizewinners have been notified of their prize, they
should send an original of the particellas of each instrument and the choral
part. This should be done before they are presented their prizes.
2.-No prizewinning compositions may be collected by 1st March 2000. After this date, the Vice-Council will no longer be responsible for these compositions
and can use them as it wishes.
THIRTEENTH
The jury will settle any problem that may arise regarding the interpretation
of these regulations.
FOURTEENTH
The participation in this competition involves the acceptance of each
one of the regulations listed above.
